Donate Your Surplus Food

IT’S EASY • IT’S SAFE • HELP PEOPLE IN NEED • HELP THE EARTH

Hunger Action LA and the City of Los Angeles worked together to create the first ordinance in Los Angeles requiring the city to donate surplus food from its facilities and events.

In that spirit we are:
    • Encouraging food businesses to donate.
    • Educating food businesses on the laws that protect them.
    • Facilitating connections between food businesses and local charities who can receive donated food.

DID YOU KNOW:

  • Nearly two million Californians don’t have enough to eat.
  • 1 million Angelenos receive emergency food assistance.
  • 5 million tons of food are wasted in California each year.
  • Millions of tons of wasted food go into landfills where it contributes to global warming.
  • Donors are protected from any liability when donating food to a nonprofit organization.

Donating Your Surplus Food is Easy!

  • Call 3-1-1 and ask for a charity near you that accepts donations, or
  • Contact one of our food collection partners.
  • Let them know what kind of food you’re donating, if it needs refrigeration, how much food there is and when it can be picked up or dropped off.
  • Try to arrange for pickup or delivery well in advance.
